Does Humanity Care?

Written By Linda Mains

Life is compatible with death, as breathing is essential to life. Disease, destruction, fate, lose, hope and heartbreak is the stuff that makes for great country western songs, and for things, most of us will discover are a part of our lives. What is life? Why do some people live threw the most amazing tragedy's and accident’s...while other's don't? Aren't these questions some of humanities age old questions, which man has been asking for millennium? When you're a kid, dying never enters your head, from 4 years of age on. You'll believe in a deathless existence, until...your first pet dies. Or at least that was one of the ways, I discovered death. When you're a kid, you also probably believed, that everything will remain the same. Until…a loved one dies, everybody and everything will always be there until something like that happens to us.

Actually, before my first pet died, after I had already discovered death. Death happened for me one day when…being a very curious 4-year-old. While going threw my grandparents magazines, I stumbled across a Time Life Magazine…I don’t remember what was on the cover of that magazine, but I do remember what was on the inside of it. The images on the inside of that magazine have disturbed me to the core of my little being…and still do! I gasped, as any 4 years old would, over the pictures that I saw there. I saw black and white pictures, of naked, emancipated, shaven head bodies, that were thrown, one top of the other…like hundreds of tattered rag dolls. They were lifeless and sunken eyed! That was my first experience with ever seeing dead people, and they where people whom where victimized, brutally tortured and killed by the Nazis, and some where my relatives. So I went to my Grandmother and asked her who where those people…? She told me; “they were Jewish and we are related to them. Don’t ever tell anyone that you are Jewish, or that same fate might befall onto you!” So for my entire childhood, I grew up with the fear that if the wrong people where to find out, that I was a mix of Jewish and Costa Rican…that I might be murdered by someone someday. So I grew up knowing about death, murder and fear…like some people know about how they like their coffee in the morning.

We live in a society that glamorizes victimizers…my own son idealized the Nazis for their, oh so cool uniforms. And that’s exactly what Hitler had done; he had made it cool to be a murderer. Sense the S.S had the coolest uniforms, they where admired by German youth, and unfortunately are still being admired by many young people around the world. I personally know that we glamorize the victimizers! We don’t glamorize the victims; we belittle and demoralize the victims! Unless you don’t think it’s belittling, degrading and demoralizing to see people naked, sunken eyed and emancipated in a pit? Especially, if you where me; knowing that some of those victims, may have been your relatives. I’m using the Nazis, because, what they did to their victims was worse then what those monsters had originally hopped for. Not only did they kill and annihilate the memories of them ever existing in the world; by killing most of their friends and family members off. These monsters took away the memory of them ever existing in the world. So I believe these crimes have been victimizing their victims, ever since these people have died. But I guess that’s just how humanity treats its victims? If you’re murdered from the stories that I’ve watched, and from the people that I’ve known, who have been killed. A. It’s either their fault, of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or B. at least it wasn’t me or my family, types of attitudes you’ll here from other people…about the murder that took place somewhere.

If God never forgets about the people whom have been murdered…then why do people so easily cast off the victims of brutal crimes, like so many pieces of garbage? In a movie called ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the victimizer was telling his would be victim; “nobody ever misses these girls, they’re whores or foreigners… that nobody really cares about. So when they disappear no one cares!”  Are we really that uncaring about people, whom have been murdered, are they disposable like yesterdays trash?  To be forgotten with the passage of time? Why doesn’t the world have one day, to remember all the people that have been brutally murdered around the world? Weren’t these people’s life’s important to other people in some way? Weren’t they someone’s, mother, father, sister, brother, relative, lover, friend teacher, or co-worker somewhere at sometime? Didn’t their lives mean just as much as our life’s do today?  Maybe one day every country, especially Germany, could dedicate a wall with all the people’s names, whom have been brutally murdered upon that wall. So they will be remembered for the rest of time. Why? Because every one of those people were important! That’s why! The worst thing that can befall on any human being, that has ever been alive, is to be murdered and then forgotten. It would be like you had never existed on the face of the earth. Now that was the real crime, that all of the Nazis and many other criminals around the world have accomplished and our really guilty of. They are also guilty of making their victim’s, appear less then human, by the simple brutality of their crimes upon their innocent victims.

While I was watching the movie called the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. There was a scene, where a psycho path is about to kill the major character in the movie. So he asks the killer, as he’s tied up; “why do you do what you do? The killer’s answer was this; “because after you rape them, you really have to kill them. So no one finds out about what you’ve done! But do you really want to know, what really excites me? It’s when they realize, that everything is over, and that they won’t be able to live out the rest of their lives. Then when you strangle the life out of them, and you see the light going out of their eyes, there isn’t a greater feeling in the world, it’s like you’re on top of the world!” As he was about to hang him with an electrical cord, the Girl with the Dragon tattoo sneaks up from behind him…hits him in the head with a golf club. She saved her friend and then unties him, going after the psycho-path, whom then runs his car off the road. His car bursts into flames, as she just stands there watching him burn. When she returns, her friend asks her; “why did she let him burn?” I love her reply; “Because he’s a fucking monster, which preyed on the weak. Who got his kicks by rapping and torturing women that were his innocent victims…victims! Who didn’t deserve to die! He would have killed you too, if I hadn’t saved you. So why do you care about what happens to an evil fuck like that?” Why do we care more about evil fucks like the perpetrator in the movie “Girl with a Dragon Tattoo,” then we do about the victims of these horrible crimes?

When I was a kid, I believed in fairy tails, and in fairy tails, because the monster’s where to ugly to live, most of them where killed by angry villagers. They weren’t glorified and then turned into  mainstream movie’s for television. These monsters where killed in these fairy tails, because, they where to ugly to live, and all the villagers lived happily ever after, once they were dead! Is most of humanity that has been touched by these brutal crimes… living happily ever after? The loved ones of these victims know that their loved one, was not just murdered once but twice. A victim that in a couple of years, most people will have forgotten completely about. The loved ones of the persons whom were murdered, will realize, it was like their murdered relative had never existed. Making it seem at least to me, like these innocent victims have been murdered twice. Once their lives where taken from them, and then the memories of that life was eradicated off the face of the planet, into the haze of time.

I believe that America and the world should never forget the victims of these types of horrible crimes. I’ve only had one loved one die so far, and when I saw the light go out in his eyes, it broke my heart. Are the societies around the world, really so heartless, that the only victims that we have any room in our hearts to remember, are our fallen veterans, the victims of 9/11, Jesus or some other saint that was murdered? Let’s not forget the unknown soldiers as well, who have fallen, because, they are remembered too. But humanity can’t have one day, all around the world, to remember every person that has been brutally murdered? I guess if humanity can’t give these victims their own day, then all the people of the world, are really beyond all redemption.
