Mr. Obama And Off Shore Drilling

OK it's a beautiful Wensday here in Cali. The sky is really blue, and it's really sunny out today. I'm having a beautiful day. Now, I just love going to the beach, and having the sky above my head, with the sand in between my toes. I don't know how many of my readers have either visited Cali or lived here. But the beach, is one of the best things, about living here in Cali. If you visited or lived here. The weekends aren't special in Cali, unless, you can visit or...go to the beach, at least a couple of times a year. Which brings me, to my next deep thought moment.

Has any of my party people out there, ever watched the Rachel Maddow show? Anyway...she was talking last night, about oil spills, and how they have faulty safety equipment. Equipment that even the makers are saying, needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. So after the last huge f*ck up, by BP, President Obama is telling us; that any potential safety hazards which might happen in the future. Have all been fixed by those same big-oil-corporations. Rachel is saying; "B.S they have!

Here's a quote by Rachel so you'll know were she stands on the subject:

The oil companies keep talking about how technologically advanced they are, but what they have gotten technologically advanced at is drilling deeper. They haven't gotten any more advanced on how to deal with the risks attached to that. They haven't made any technological advances in the last 30 years when it comes to stopping a leak like this when it happens.
OK, I have a question? Why do Mega-Oil-Corps, have a liability cut-off, that's set at (1)$75 million? That totally sucks! So lets say, these dumb-asses drill in deep watter, and then have another 5000 gallon per day spill. Are they going to pay to clean that mess up? Yes and no, only if the costs, don't go over $75 million. One of the Ex-Oil-VIPs, who was on the Maddow Show said; "spills are inevitable, simply because of human nature. Mistakes will happen!" A consumer group called the (1)NCL, has asked for the $75 million dollar gap, to be removed from these Oil-Corporations financial responsibility cut-off lines. When having to pay the American people back, for damaging our beautiful oceans ego-systems and thousands of fisherman's lives and lively-hoods. So why is there a $75 million dollar cut-off, when paying for the cost of clean up after a spill? Spills that these off shore Oil-Corps, created by drilling in deep watter. Especially when, they know, that their safety equipment "does not work." The ocean is for everyone of us, and for the beautiful Aquatic life that lives within it. It doesn't seem fair to us, or...the ocean animals, to let greed oil-corporations, to continue drilling off shore. While having the ability to destroy the ocean, and also having the ability with cut-offs, not to pay for most of the damage their wells have caused. These greedy oil-corporations, know, that if another spill where to happen, they'd have no "real" way to stop it.

This is what the National Commission said about the BP Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill;

(2)In addition to tragically claiming 11 human lives, the BP oil disaster polluted water and wetlands, harmed fish and wildlife species, and threatened the livelihoods of those in the Gulf who depend on a healthy ocean for jobs and business. Our ocean is our life support system, and the BP oil disaster provided a stark reminder of how vital healthy oceans are to our economic well-being and the cultural identity of the Gulf Coast, and how vulnerable both of those are to offshore oil drilling."Even as the spill was ongoing, President Obama recognized the need to fully restore the Gulf ecosystem. The President acknowledged that 'we need to do a lot more to protect the health and safety of our people; to safeguard the quality of our air and water, and to preserve the natural beauty and bounty of America.'

(2)The Commission's recommendations also have implications for the Arctic Ocean, a frontier region that industry has targeted for exploration and development. Following through on the Commission's recommendations will be critical, not only to ensure restoration of the Gulf of Mexico, but also to ensure that adequate safeguards —including preparedness and response capability— are in place before oil and gas development is allowed to proceed in the vulnerable Arctic waters. At present, there is not enough science to support wise decisions about whether, when, and where to engage in offshore drilling in the Arctic, nor to evaluate the impacts of such drilling. In addition, the ability to respond effectively to an oil spill in the harsh Arctic conditions remains extremely limited.

This is the funny thing, that even I realized, while listening to Rachel Maddow. I realized she's right! This evil empire of GREEDY-OIL-CORPORATIONS have no legitimate way of containing the next oil spill. They can only trap the oil that spills. Which doesn't prevent the toxic goo, from escaping into our oceans, and covering all of the oceans, plants, animals and beaches. With disgusting, smelly, brown oil. Nice? I don't think so...

Now here are the effects of what an oil-spill does to the Eco-system;

  • (3)When oil starts mixing in water, it can change composition and becomes what's known as "mousse". This is a sticky substance that clings even more to whatever it comes in contact with. Many marine animals don't know to avoid a slick and some fish may even be attracted to it as it can resemble food.
  • Hypothermia and drowning of birds as the oil breaks down the insulating capabilities of feathers, makes them heavier and compromises flying ability
  • hypothermia in some seal pups as the oil destroys insulating fur
  • if oil is ingested, it can either poison the animal outright, make them extremely sick or create a level of toxins in their system that then causes poisoning further up the food chain. Birds and other animals often ingest oil when trying to clean themselves. Shellfish and corals are particularly at risk in these scenarios as they cannot escape from an oil slick.
  • damage to the airways of birds and animals.
  • damage to animal immune systems
  • interruption of breeding and fouling of breeding grounds
  • thinner bird and turtle egg shells and also damage to fish larvae, causing deformities
  • damage to sea grass beds and other shelter/feeding areas
  • tainting of algae, which perform a vital role in waterway ecosystems
  • Even once the oil appears to have dissipated, it can still lurk beneath the surface of beaches and the sea bed, severely affecting marine organisms that burrow, such as crabs, for literally decades. These burrowing creatures are also food for other animals, so the cycle of poisoning continues for many years.

You know what? I understand, everything in America, and I also understand that the world can be bought, sold or...traded. But...there are some things, that you can't replace or repair. One of those things, are our Oceans, and the aquatic-life within that world. When I look at the ocean. I always look at it, with ah and respect. Because...I know, that there are millions of different life forms, living within it. The money that is made from the oil, that's pumped out of our Oceans. Is not worth, losing, one of the most miraculous environments on the face of our planet.

It takes years and years, for the ocean to recover from these types of disasters. So what did Mr. Obama go and do? Well Mr. Obama let our Government, give out more permits, for more off shore drilling. That makes sense...right? Now more oil can be pumped out, from those new off shore wells. Which will be located off the New Mexican Coast. It just makes me really sad, knowing, that 6 to 8 more off shore permits, where ever allowed to happen in the first place. Especially knowing, that there is absolutely no safety shut off, for these pumps. So welcome to a future! Where more oil, is going to spill into the ocean! The only thing they can do is after a spill, when it does happen. Is clean up!  But...these greedy oil company's, have covered their asses here too, because they have a $75 million dollar cut-off, when cleaning up their spills. So it looks as if, the only people who won't lose, from having those wells, are those same greedy oil corp's! Oh and those new wells, won't stop us from using foreign oil either. They're only going to help the greedy oil company's profit margins. Why? Because...most of that oil, will be going, to the international community to be sold at market prices. That oil will not be going to the U.S! Like Mr. Obama keeps telling us it will. Which was suposed to be the real reason, for even giving those new permits, for those off shore oil rigs, in the first place. Thanks Mr. Obama, keep on working, to improve our Oceans ecological systems! When you're flying in your jet, don't forget to tell your daughters, to look at the ocean. Why did I say that? Because...with the way things are going, it looks as if, we may be looking at a marshy-brown future, for our ocean in years to come. Will another oil spill happen? You can bet your ass it will! That's the end of today's deep thought moment.
